We're still at the stage of ironing out possible teething problems with the move to the new server, so I'd like to ask whether anyone is still experiencing intermittent problems in connecting to GoS?

If so, please could you reply here (when you can get online!), with as much information as possible. In particular it would be helpful if you could answer the questions below.

- Where are you based (Europe, USA, etc.)?

- What error message do you typically see?

- How often do you have problems, and for how long?

- Is it at a particular time of day?

- Are you using your default ISP DNS servers, or have you switched to OpenDNS/Google?

- Are you using a proxy?

- Can you access the site over the 3G network on your smartphone, but not on your computer?

- Have you tried using tracert to identify where the problem may be? Instructions on using tracert, which is a built-in Windows utility, can be found here. Please try this using all of gardenofshadows.digitalperversion.net, gardenofshadows.org.uk and 212.67.219.58, and post/PM screenshots showing the results. Please try this once when the site does work, and once when it doesn't, so that I can compare the results.

- Is there any other pattern that you can identify?

There is a known issue that if you try to access the site at the following address www.gardenofshadows.digitalperversion.net it will not work, but it should work if you omit the www at the front (i.e. just use gardenofshadows.digitalperversion.net instead). I don't know why there is a problem with this, and I'm still trying to figure it out!

Thanks. Smiley

- USA
- DNS server not responding... ? Something like that.
- I see it at least once a day, I haven't noticed any particular pattern to it.
- OpenDNS
- No proxy
- I don't have any internet aside from the computer.
- It didn't know tracert was a thing until just now.
- It fails, I clear my cache, restart chrome and everything is fine.

- Belgium, Europe.
- Something about the server not responding, will copy it down properly next time it happens.
- Every two days or so. For how long depends. Sometimes I keep refreshing until I can get in, sometimes I give up.
- No specific time of day.
- OpenDNS, couldn't get in before.
- No proxy.
- Don't have a smartphone, so can't check.
- Had never heard of tracert.
- If I keep refreshing I can usually get in eventually. Quite often I can load the index page but not unread posts.

Thanks, you two! Smiley

I've added an explanation of tracert to my post above. If you could both try it some time, and let me know the results, it could be helpful. Preferably try once when the site is working properly for you, and once when it isn't, so that I can compare the results.

Yeah, next time it happens I'll definitely be writing down the error and running that thing for you. Smiley

- USA
- Server Not Responding, will edit with the complete error when it happens next!
- Usually one or two times a day, when I access the site for the first time (almost always) and sporadically while browsing.
- No particular time of day.
- I have the same issue with both my default ISP (which I'm using now) and OpenDNS (which I use on my other computer)
- No
- Idiot phone, you've failed me again! :c Can't try.
- All the tracert's completed normally, if I am reading this correctly. The first time-out is totally normal for my ISP, so disregard that. One, two and three. I'll try running it again when I encounter the issue next!
- I always get the error when I initially load the website each day, and it can take one, two, or sometimes three refreshing to get on. I can always refresh and get on after a few tries (*knocks on wood*). Occasionally, if I access the website at a later time, I will get an error, but sometimes I won't, and receiving errors during regular browsing (after initially getting on) are pretty rare.

Edit: After closing my browser and reconnecting, bumped into the issue again. Here's the error message (Server Not Found). Tracert came back exactly the same as before, and one refresh allowed me to reconnect. I hope that's helpful in some way!

-USA
-Error 404 page not found
-I can ALWAYS get to the main index page but when clicking links to try and view any other site it will usually happen at least once before I can get there.
-Not that I know of. I'll try to figure out if there's a pattern but I've not noticed one so far.
-I believe I'm using my default isp
-No proxy
-I get the same error on Kindle
-Tracert appears to be normal but I'm not 100% sure on how to read it.
-Issue persists with firefox and chrome (haven't tried IE)

USA

Either Server is not responding or Chrome cannot connect. I'm seeing server not responding more often now

I'm not seeing a particular pattern. Sometimes I can connect, sometimes I can't.

Open DNS on my Desktop, default DNS on laptop. I have problems with both.

No Proxy

Don't have a kindle or smart phone

No time outs on all three right now on the laptop while the site is working. Didn't know it existed before this post so haven't done it when I have problems.

- Europe

- My browser displays it in Finnish but it's about "Failed to connect to remote server"

- Usually couple times a day since I visit here every few hours whenever I'm awake. Usually I get in after refreshing few times or just waiting 2-20 minutes but occasionally there are few hours when I can't reach GoS at all.

- Nights for me but that probably is partly because I'm usually only online at nights. I'll try to test during day time whenever I have chance for that.

- Default

- I have tried with opera turbo but that didn't change the outcome in anyway

- I don't have tool to test this so I don't know

- Haven't tried it since I usually can eventually reach GoS if I'm just stubborn enough  Tongue But I saved the guide to test the next time when GoS hates me.

- No, it seems that happen completely randomly.

One thing I have noticed working sometimes is to try both http://gardenofshadows.org.uk/gardenofshadows/ and http://gardenofshadows.digitalperversion.net/smf/ address, sometimes while I fail to load the site using other url the other one still works, there also doesn't seem to be pattern in which one works and which one doesn't so I have both addresses bookmarked and when one doesn't load I try the other one.  Confused

I got a message that gardenofshadows.digitalperversion.net wasn't responding and ran a tracert on gardenofshadows.digitalperversion.net. There was a timeout on #6, but the rest were normal (I think).

I tried a little later and was able to access the site to post this.

Thanks, all. I'm a little dismayed that people are having such problems, especially when it works perfectly for me! Sad

Since it seems so random, the tracert stuff would really help I think. It would be great if everyone who has posted here could try this once when the site does load, and once again when it doesn't, as the comparison is the important thing. If you don't want to post the results publicly, please PM the screenshots to me. I need to see the results myself, however, in order to work out where things might be going wrong and see if there is a pattern.

Hermit Fox, are you using a Mac? Depending on which version of the OS you are using, you may be able to use the in-built traceroute utility. If you are running Windows, your computer will definitely have the tracert utility (see the link in my first post above).

I'm having intermittent problems, but the days when I can't get in all day are coming less often. I get a variety of errors. I uninstalled AVG Safe Search (only the Safe Search part) because I was pretty sure it was exacerbating the problem and besides it kept diverting me to a links page dominated by "Watch Perversion Online" and I am quite capable of choosing when  I want porn, thanks.

Some error messages are "server not found," "server timeout," and essentially, site doesn't exist. Safe Search would tell me the site doesn't exist and then include a link to GOS on its page (which hardly ever worked). Like everybody else, I'll start making a list.

Just now Chrome said the site didn't exist but then it redirected me from the correct address to the correct address and got me in? Go figure.

I clear the cache frequently, have not gone to Open DNS because my ISP's DNS ought to be good enough.

I'll do the tracert thing too, now that I know about it.

edit: should I run tracert for each different error message as well as whe n it does work? Or would one non-working instance be enough?

I typically get an error on my first try, but as soon as I click F5, I get in. Smiley

- Suriname, South America
- Server Not Responding, Cannot find page!
- Always (even after the directions on the page)
- Always, doesn't matter what time!

Not putting in the -www- works! Can't access it via google!
Strangely enough, I CAN access the site via old download links! (which showed me you were up and running again)
I previously bookmarked one of the download pages as link to here, but I can do the homepage now!
